Nutley Renters Scammed On Craigslist, Sign Phony Home Lease

The Nutley scam ended with the duped renters moving out of what they thought was their new home.

Some prospective Nutley home renters found out that they were the victims of a Craigslist-borne scam when police informed them they had signed a phony lease agreement.

According to Nutley police, officers were dispatched to a Union Avenue home on Sept. 23 on a report of a potential burglary.

On arrival, police met with prospective renters who told officers that they had just signed a lease agreement to live at the property and were there to change the locks.

Police then contacted the owner of the property, who advised them that the lease agreement was fraudulent and the occupants had been scammed.

The prospective renters subsequently removed their property from the home and handed over the keys to the changed locks and the phony lease agreement to police.
