Nutley Resident Calls Out Phone Scammer: Police

A Nutley resident had the wisdom to recognize an alleged phone scam in progress, according to police.

Nutley, NJ – A Nutley resident had the wisdom to recognize an alleged phone scam in progress last week, according to police.

The Nutley Police Department stated that on Jan. 7, a township resident helped officers to document a suspicious phone call that may have been a scam.

According to the resident, they received a call from a person who claimed that their grandson was arrested after being involved in a motor vehicle accident while using his phone.

The caller allegedly told the resident that the bail would be $4,000, and gave instructions to send gift cards purchased at the CVS as payment.

Police said that the victim – “very aware that the call was a scam” – then asked the person to call back. The resident then called their grandson and verified that he had not been arrested.

When the alleged scammer called back, the resident told them that the conversation was being recorded and to repeat what they stated earlier.

The caller then hung up, police reported.

Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo stated in a release that the alleged incident is a common phone scam. He advised that no one provide personal information or send money without first verifying authenticity of caller.
