NUTLEY, NJ — A Nutley resident was recently scammed by someone they thought represented a rental car company, police say.
The Nutley Police Department released the following details about the fraud, which was reported Dec. 26 on Berton Place:
“Officers responded on report of a fraud. The victim stated they had contacted who they believed was a rental car company and were advised they would need to purchase gift cards to pay for the rental car due to the company not accepting their credit card. The victim stated they did purchase the gift cards and sent them to the party. They stated they were able to find the correct contact for the rental company, who advised that they were scammed and to contact the police.”
The resident declined the opportunity to be entered as an identity theft victim. The detective bureau has been advised of the incident, authorities said.
