Nutley Country Music Fan Swindled By Fake Brett Eldredge Profiles: PD
Police: A Nutley resident thought they were talking with a country music star. They weren't – and it ended up costing thousands of dollars.
NUTLEY, NJ — For more than two years, a Nutley resident thought they were talking with popular country music singer-songwriter Brett Eldredge. They weren’t – and it ended up costing thousands of dollars, police say.
On Friday, the Nutley Police Department released the following statement about the fraud case, which was reported earlier this week:
“The victim stated that they believed for approximately 2 ½ years, they have been speaking with country music superstar Brett Eldredge. Communications were through four different social media accounts claiming to be Brett Eldredge on Google Hangouts, along with several other unknown people claiming to be in Mr. Eldredge’s inner circle. Over the course of this period, the victim has sent an estimated $25,000 in prepaid cards to these people, in addition to photographs of their driver’s license to a party claiming to be the banker of Brett Eldredge, who has threatened to sell the victim’s personal information to unknown people in Russia. Additionally, there was also an order of 12 phones made through Verizon that were shipped to the victim’s residence, and they were directed to send those phones to Illinois.”
