Nutley Residents Get Fake Calls From ‘State Police, Social Sec.'

A pair of callers tried to pass themselves off as members of the State Police and the Social Security Administration, authorities said.

NUTLEY, NJ — A pair of callers tried to fraudulently pass themselves off as members of the State Police and the Social Security Administration in recent scam attempts, Nutley police said.

According to the Nutley Police Department, the following incidents were reported in the township.

June 23 – “The victim of a fraudulent incident contacted headquarters to make a report. They stated they received a phone call from a male party named ‘Officer Kevin Miller’ of the State Police. The actor told the victim that their grandson was driving for Uber and was pulled over by the State Police and drugs were found in the vehicle. Additionally, the grandson was placed under arrest and $8,000 cash was needed for his release. The victim told the actor that they would get the money together and return their call. The victim reached out to their grandson who stated they were in good health and currently working. The victim realized this was a potential scam and did not contact the caller back.”

July 1 – “Headquarters received a report of a suspicious incident. The victim stated they received a voicemail from an actor claiming to be from the Social Security Administration. Upon returning the call, the victim spoke with someone who had all of their personal information, including social security number and advised that they were under investigation by the FBI. The caller said the FBI found a vehicle registered to the victim which contained 20 pounds of cocaine and they were facing jail time. The victim hung up the phone and contacted the FBI Newark Field Office and was informed there was no investigation and he was the victim on a scam. The victim was advised to contact their financial institutions to alert them of the incident. They were also informed of the Identity Theft Victim database which they declined at this time.”
