Parking In Belleville: Community Meeting Will Give Residents A Chance To Sound Off

BELLEVILLE, NJ — A community meeting about parking will take place in Belleville on Wednesday, Sept. 30.

Belleville township officials and administrators will host the public discussion at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall, 152 Washington Avenue.

Here’s what to expect, according to a municipal advisory:

“Join Belleville residents and township professionals for a community discussion on parking. Learn about current conditions across the township, hear about planned initiatives including a town-wide permit parking initiative, and share your questions, concerns and feedback.”

The announcement sparked some comments about parking in Belleville, including permit parking – which some supported and others opposed.

“I would like to suggest looking into a residential parking permit system, where each household is allowed a reasonable number of street parking permits based on the number of residents and/or vehicles registered to the home,” a commenter wrote.

“The goal isn’t to prevent people from having guests or using the street it’s to prevent one homeowner from taking advantage of the public street and essentially using it as a private storage lot for multiple vehicles,” they continued. “Parking is a shared community resource, and there should be a fair system so that everyone has a reasonable opportunity to park near their own home.”

Not everyone agreed.

“Parking permits… oh I hope not,” one person commented. “So ridiculous.”

“So I’m taxed to park on the street I’m already pay taxes on,” another commenter said.
