Police sent an alert to surrounding agencies and cemeteries after finding the headstone, however it may not have been reported missing.
“If this was the loss of a child his parents must have been devastated, and to learn that someone would intentionally remove his headstone is unnerving,” Nutley Mayor and Police Director Alphonse Petracco said.
“I hope that someone can identify where this occurred so that we can return it to where it belongs,” he added.
“Until we can determine how and why this headstone was left we can only speculate that it was removed from a human grave,” Nutley Police Chief Thomas Strumolo stated.
Anyone with information about the headstone can contact Nutley police at 973-284-4940.
