Extra security has been posted at a New Jersey high school after a potential threat involving a "shooting cartoon," according to officials.

A Kearny High School teacher discovered a cartoon drawing of a stick figure shooting another stick figure with the date "April 3, 2017" written on it, according to police. A second drawing also was found, but police did not identify the content.

No note and no additional information about the student's intentions and status were available, though police did say at least one student was questioned about a second drawing that was found. The student, who was not identified, was brought in for a psychological evaluation and the threat ultimately was deemed not credible.

Patricia Blood, the district's superintendent, said extra security was posted nonetheless, and she posted a note on the district's website "in an effort to dispel rumors that have circulated Kearny High School in recent weeks."

"Please know that district and high school administration take all threats seriously, including one that began as a result of an earlier incident that was investigated, and handled by both administration and the Kearny Police Department," she said.

She said the first incident involving a cartoon drawing that noted the date April 3rd occurred nearly two months ago, and was fully investigated by the Kearny Police Department.

The second incident involved an "alarming writing" that was found in a student’s writing assignment, though it had no mention of a threat to the school.

"In addition to having our school resource officer, administration, supervisors, and security posted at entrances and throughout the halls, in an abundance of caution, we will also have an increased police presence at the high school on Monday," she said.

The regular school day, including PARCC testing and after-school activities will take place as usual. "We will be vigilant in monitoring access to all of our school buildings. We want to assure parents that their children’s safety is our first priority," Blood said.
