PSEG Building New Substation In Belleville, Will Power 12K Customers

Construction will be mostly complete by the end of the summer, PSE&G said.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — A new PSE&G substation that will supply power to 12,000 customers is being built in Belleville, with construction expected to be finished by the end of the summer.

Some Belleville residents recently got a letter about the ongoing construction, which is taking place on the company’s right of way between Carmer Avenue to the north and Bremond Street, Beech Street, Floyd Street and White Oak Terrace to the south.

According to the letter – which was issued through the township – Belleville officials have “no say, authority or approval” in regard to the creation, location, design or implementation of the new substation.

“PSE&G is currently building a new electric substation within PSE&G’s right of way in Belleville. The project will redistribute loads from nearby stations and will initially supply power to approximately 12,000 customers. This project is one example of how PSE&G is upgrading its electric infrastructure to meet the evolving energy needs of our customers.”

“In late 2021, we contacted neighboring customers who might be impacted by the construction,” she continued. “We explained the project and how customers will benefit from the system upgrade. We also shared the proposed schedule for construction and details on the physical features of the new substation.”

The project received local zoning board approval in December 2021, she noted.

Construction is expected to be “substantially complete” by the end of the summer, according to PSE&G. Residents with questions or comments can contact the company at 1-800-901-5035.

TOWN HALL MEETING

A public town hall meeting is planned in Belleville on Monday, Feb. 12 to discuss the proposal. It will take place at 6 p.m. in the council chambers on the second floor of Town Hall, 152 Washington Avenue.

Representatives from PSE&G are expected to be present at the meeting.
