Qing Dynasty Flag Flies In Belleville
The Qing Dynasty flag was raised at Belleville Town Hall in honor of Qingming Day, the traditional Chinese Memorial Day.
Belleville, NJ - The Chinese Emperor's flag flew in an official capacity in Belleville for the first time in 130 years on Monday.
The Qing Dynasty flag was raised Monday at Belleville Town Hall in honor of Qingming Day, the traditional Chinese Memorial Day, according to a news release.
According to Belleville Historical Society President Michael Perrone, the township was home to the “first Chinese community in the eastern United States.”

“The 1869 three sided Emperor's dragon banner flew in Belleville from 1870 until 1887,” Perrone stated. “Some of the first Chinese immigrants are buried in and around the old Belleville Dutch Reformed Church.”
