Seller Beware: Nutley Residents Try To Sell Items, Encounter Alleged Fraud

A go-cart ad. An eBay transaction. What could go wrong?

Nutley, NJ - Two Nutley residents reported that attempted transactions went wrong last week, resulting in accusations of fraud, according to police.

The first incident was reported on Nov. 30, when a resident told the Nutley Police Department that they were the victim of an improper transaction that took place via online retailer eBay.

According to the resident, they listed an iPhone 5 with sim card and case on eBay which eventually sold. After receiving the items, the party who purchased the phone and case allegedly told the seller that they were unhappy with the product and made a deal to return them.

Police advised the victim of their right to file a complaint.

GO-KART FOR SALE

Nutley police also received a report of fraud on Dec. 1 from a resident who alleged that they were almost ripped off during a go-kart sale.

According to police, the resident alleges that they listed a go-kart for sale via an ad in a publication with a price of $2,000. The victim told police that after placing the ad, they received an inquiry via email from a person interested in buying the go-kart.

The buyer then sent the victim a bank check for $4,000 – twice the cost of the go-kart – and asked the victim to send $2,000 to an address in Vineland, police said.

After depositing the check, the victim found that it had bounced and that the address in Vineland that the buyer provided was fake, police stated.

Officers advised the resident to contact police headquarters if the buyer created any further issues.
