Something Stinks In Nutley: Town Dumps On Trash Service

Some Nutley residents are reporting that trash hasn't been picked up since Memorial Day.

Nutley, NJ – Is Nutley dumping its garbage provider?

On Monday evening, town officials announced that Nutley has entered into an “emergency agreement” with another solid waste hauler.

“They will be arriving in Nutley at 7 p.m. [Monday] and will be working throughout the night,” town officials stated on the municipal website. “Thank you for your patience during this challenging time.”

On Wednesday, Nutley Commissioner Steven Rogers released an update about the situation:

"We are happy to announce that a new sanitation company Basso,Inc.,  will begin service in our township  Thursday, June 9 at 6 a.m.  There are no changes in scheduled pick-ups.  Additionally, there is no additional cost to the township. With regard to today’s vegetative/bulk pick up:  As we transition, some vegetative/bulk may not be picked up today.  However, please leave it a curbside and it will be picked up on this Saturday only. Bulk/vegetative waste will continue to be picked up every Wednesday."

Rogers added:

"We know this has been a very difficult time for our residents. We have been working on this issue day and night since last week. There were many things we had to do in order to make sure that every decision we made was within the framework of the law and that this matter would be rectified as soon as possible."

Several Nutley residents recently told News 12 NJ that their garbage hasn’t been picked up by trash collectors since Memorial Day, leaving a stinky mess all over town.

Nutley residents reacted to the town’s initial announcement with frustration on social media:

  • “I hope I don't have to pay extra in the long run for this.”
  • “It's Tuesday morning, my regular garbage pickup day, and my garbage is still here from Friday”
  • “What happened to the other company? If they did not honor their contract are we suing for breach of contract? Where is the money coming from to pay all of these emergency sanitation companies? Are the companies conducting emergency pickups charging a premium for this and if so who is paying it?”

According to the municipal website, the township’s provider is the Farmingdale-based Future Sanitation.

The company, which “services New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania” according to its website, recently came under fire from another Essex County town, Bloomfield.
