Storm Did A Serious Number On Nutley; Police Catalog Damage

Nutley PD: After last week's storm, vehicles were trapped in floods, power lines came down, and 4 police cars were crushed by a tree limb.

NUTLEY, NJ — A recent summer storm did a serious number on Nutley, authorities reported Tuesday.

Last week, Nutley was among the North Jersey towns that saw power outages and damage after a severe storm ripped through the state.

Nutley police recounted the damage cataloged on July 7, which included:

  • Two vehicles were damaged due to tree limbs falling on top of them on River Road. One car had damage observed on the hood and front bumper while the other had minor damage to the front windshield and front passenger side.
  • Chestnut Street had a tree limb fall in the back parking lot of police headquarters, causing damage to four police vehicles. Damage was sustained to the front hoods, windshields, side mirrors and bumpers.
  • Cambridge Heights complex reported property damage due to a private tree falling onto a vehicle. The car was observed to have severe damage and the management company was made aware of the incident.
  • Officers observed downed utility wires on Vreeland Avenue that were caused by a tree limb. The electrical service of a nearby home was observed to be damaged and torn off the side of the house along with the siding on the second story. PSE&G was contacted and responded to the scene along with Nutley DPW, who removed the downed tree limb.

But the troubles from the storm didn’t end there, Nutley police said.

On July 8 – due to the heavy rain and flash flooding that happened throughout town – four vehicles needed to be removed from waterfilled roadways. All were privately towed after the storm subsided, authorities said.

“Nutley firefighters removed two people from a water-filled vehicle on River Road,” authorities said, adding that the flooding also stalled travel within the township during the evening rush hour.
