NUTLEY, NJ — Does the idea of imposing term limits on Nutley municipal boards appeal to you? You may want to mark Tuesday, Jan. 15 on your calendar, a town official says.

Nutley Commissioner Steven Rogers recently announced on Twitter that the Board of Commissioners (BOC) public meeting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 15 will include a discussion about a resolution to mandate term limits on “a number of township boards.”

Last summer, the Nutley Coalition for Change started an online petition titled: "Term Limits for Township of Nutley, Appointed Board Members." (See the petition here)

Group member Tammy Rossi said that historically, "only a select few" have been appointed to serve on Nutley's township boards.

"It is time for our commissioners to reach farther and wider into our community and give others an opportunity to serve," Rossi wrote. "The Nutley Coalition for Change believes change is good, change is necessary. We ask you to join us in appealing to our leaders to enact term limits for board appointments."

According to Rossi, some reasons for instituting term limits in Nutley include:

  • "Term limits will provide opportunities for new appointees to offer current insights."
  • "Term limits cultivate new leadership that builds on the work of former members."
  • "Term limits will ensure board members with new ideas, new passion, and a fresh perspective."
  • "Term limits will provide an opportunity for more Nutley citizens to be appointed to our boards."
