Vehicle Found Ablaze On Rt. 21 Was Stolen, Nutley Police Say

Firefighters from Nutley, Belleville and Clifton responded to the car fire, authorities said.

BELLEVILLE-NUTLEY, NJ — Emergency responders recently made a surprise discovery after putting out a car fire on Route 21 in Essex County, authorities say: the vehicle was stolen.

According to the Nutley Police Department, the vehicle fire took place around 8:42 p.m. on March 14 near mile marker 8.5. When emergency responders arrived at the scene, the car – a Mitsubishi Outlander – was “fully engulfed” in flames.

Firefighters from Nutley and Clifton extinguished the blaze, while Belleville and Clifton firefighters assisted with closing the highway, police said.

After towing the vehicle and reopening the highway, authorities discovered that the car was stolen from Passaic, police said.
