Pedestrian Killed In Belleville Is Newark Resident: ECPO

A Jeep struck and killed a Newark resident in Belleville, authorities said.

BELLEVILLE, NJ — A vehicle struck and killed a Newark woman as she was walking in Belleville on Monday night, authorities said.

The fatal strike took place at 6:37 p.m. near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Mill Street, according to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office.

The victim, Nora Hernandez, 56, of Newark, was crossing Washington Avenue when a 2017 Jeep Cherokee struck her, prosecutors said.

The driver remained at the scene. No charges have been filed; a police investigation continues, authorities said.

Emergency responders transported Hernandez to Clara Maass Medical Center in Belleville. She was pronounced dead at 7:20 p.m.
