Three Belleville residents safely escaped a house fire on Saturday night, but the blaze destroyed the home and claimed the life of a family pet, authorities say.

The fire started around 7 p.m. at the two-story Belmont Avenue home, which is owned by a 95-year-old local woman and also occupied by two upstairs tenants, ABC News reported.

Belleville Fire Capt. Frank Papaianni told NJ.com that the fire started in a couch in the rear of the home and extended to the second floor.
