Woman Robbed And Pepper Sprayed In Belleville: Police

The woman's attacker also injured her juvenile son during an alleged robbery on Franklin Street in Belleville, police say.

Belleville, NJ - A Newark resident violently attacked and robbed a woman and her juvenile son on Franklin Street in Belleville, police reported on Monday.

According to the Belleville Police Department, the woman told officers that the robbery took place as she and her son were entering their car around 6:21 p.m. on Nov. 27.

The victim stated that as she was getting into the car, a suspect doused her in the eyes with pepper spray, causing her to go temporarily blind.

The suspect then allegedly began striking the woman and trying to take her purse, ultimately throwing her to the ground and dragging her, police stated.

A witness nearby heard the victim’s yells for help and managed to subdue the suspect until police arrived, authorities said.

The victim’s juvenile son also sustained an injury during the incident, police reported.

Emergency responders transported the woman and her son to Clara Maass Medical Center for treatment.

According to police, the woman’s alleged attacker - Caliyto Nievesage, 60 – also had a kitchen knife concealed in his jacket.

Police charged Nievesage with robbery, aggravated assault, two counts of possession of weapon, two counts possession of weapon for unlawful purpose and simple assault.
