Women Find Knives In Passaic River While Magnet Fishing: Nutley Police

NUTLEY, NJ — Two women recently pulled a pair of knives out of the Passaic River while “magnet fishing,” Nutley police said Friday.

The women called police on Thursday after they recovered two knives from the river. They told officers they didn’t want the knives, but felt uncomfortable discarding them or throwing them back.

Nutley police took possession of the knives for safe destruction, authorities said.

A pair of knives isn’t the thing that someone has recovered from the Passaic River’s watery depths while magnet fishing, which is done with rope and – you guessed it – a powerful magnet instead of bait.

Last year, two magnet fishers from Bloomfield pulled an unexploded military shell out of the river. Police cordoned off Park Avenue, Route 21, River Road and the Lyndhurst Bridge until an Essex County Sheriff's Office bomb squad arrived. Kevin Obiedzinski and Patrick Brown, the men who found the shell, told NJ.com that they’ve found other weird stuff while magnet fishing, including guns, a truck mirror, gym weights and an ATM, which they reportedly discovered at the bottom of a lake in Branch Brook Park in Newark.
