School 5 hosted its International Night last night, featuring cuisine from the bouillabaisse of nations represented by the multicultural student body. A walk around the school gym was a culinary trip around the world, with tables lined with dishes from Ecuador to Poland to India to Italy to Guyana to Portugal to Brazil -- plus seven other nations.
The dozens of students, parents, school officials and others who attended the event also had the chance to work off those calories during an impromptu “zumba” session, the high-energy exercise routine set to heart-pumping pop music. Montclair fitness instructor Victoria Carlson took to the stage to lead rows of kids and adults in a fun workout. Deejay services were donated by X-Quisite Sounds of Belleville.
International Night was started five years ago by former principal Dennis Villano and a former School 5 parent, Anita Chacon. Her son Jeffrey, now a student at Belleville High School, helped organize this year’s event. Also in attendance last night were Board of Education members William Freda and Joseph Longo and the district superintendent, Joseph Picardo.
