Would-Be Motorcycle Thief In Essex County Can’t Start Bike: Cops

The driver of a Mercedes Benz allegedly hit a motorcycle rider with a gun and tried to steal his bike in Essex County, police say.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — An alleged motorcycle carjacker in Essex County ended up empty-handed on Sunday when he was unable to start a stolen bike after bashing the owner with a gun, authorities say.

The incident took place on the 100 block of Hobson Street in Newark around 4 p.m. when the driver of a Mercedes Benz approached a motorcycle rider, struck him with a gun and took his vehicle, according to the Newark Department of Public Safety.

The suspect’s getaway plans failed when he was unable to start the motorcycle. He returned to the Mercedes Benz and fled the scene, police said.

Newark police are conducting an investigation into the incident. Authorities released the below photo of the suspect.
