In the 'Pink' of Zumba

School 8 Hosts Zumbarathon Charity Fundraiser

In observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, School 8 has delegated October 21 as "pink" day, teaching students about the disease and raising funds for the cause.

The school received permission to wear pink (or white) shirts and jeans on this day to celebrate the event. The day was filled with various activities including students doing "acts of kindness" and writing about it.

School principal, Mrs. Dora Cavallo, said it's just wonderful to see the children doing acts of kindness, not in a big scale but in the little things they do for others, and that they understood what it was all about. She also said the teachers were really very creative in thinking up activities for the day, according of course to the school curriculum.

Michelle Riccardelli, one of the teachers and a certified Zumba instructor, suggested the culminating event of the day--the Zumbarathon Charity Fundraiser. Parents, teachers and students turned up for the event and shared a fun time dancing and working out. Others unable to attend made sure they sent donations.

Mrs. Cavallo said she felt specially happy and fulfilled on this day because "this subject is close to my heart so I'm emotional about it."

At the end of the day, the school was able to raise about $1,300 for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
