BERKELEY, NJ — Anglers will head to Island Beach State Park on Sunday, May 17, for the 35th annual Garden State Surf Fishing Classic, a statewide tournament open to participants of all ages and skill levels.
Registration for those who are not pre-registered begins at 5 a.m., with fishing scheduled from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
An awards ceremony is set for 2 p.m., where New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Acting Commissioner Ed Potosnak is expected to participate.
The annual event is designed to spotlight New Jersey’s recreational saltwater fishing tradition and the importance of protecting marine resources. According to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the tournament also gives families and anglers a chance to build skills while competing in a popular surf fishing event at the shore.
“The Garden State Surf Fishing Classic is a wonderful event that highlights the excellent saltwater fishing available in New Jersey,” said Potosnak. “The tournament gives anglers a chance to bond while learning more about the exciting sport of surf fishing, a cherished pastime in our state. Come join us on Sunday to reel in some lasting memories with friends and family.”
The angler who catches the longest fish will receive the Governor’s Award, have their name engraved on the Governor’s Cup and take home a plaque along with a prize fishing rod and reel. Additional prizes will be awarded across a range of age groups and fish species categories.
The tournament also includes categories for military veterans and high school teams. The high school division is open to students in a formal fishing club, a Hooked on Fishing-Not on Drugs group, or a non-formal group.
“We anticipate hundreds of anglers of all ages from New Jersey and neighboring states will participate and spend a fun day of fishing,” said NJDEP Fish & Wildlife Assistant Commissioner Dave Golden. “The event also provides a great opportunity to enjoy our beautiful beaches and celebrate the upcoming summer season at the Jersey shore.”
Tournament organizers said all entered fish must meet minimum length requirements. Anglers are also encouraged to use lead-free tackle and circle hooks when possible, dispose of fishing line and trash properly, review state fishing regulations and use safe fish-release practices.
The day-of registration fee is $20 for anglers 18 and older and $5 for ages 13 to 17. Children 12 and under, along with student teams, may enter free. Staff will accept only cash or checks, and park admission is free for all registrants. Before arriving, all anglers must complete the free NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry online. According to NJDEP Fish & Wildlife, the registry helps staff collect data used to manage marine resources and support the long-term sustainability of recreational fishing.
