BERKELEY, NJ — Berkeley veterans from every service era are being invited to apply for New Jersey Service Medals ahead of a Veterans Medal Ceremony planned for Oct. 6, 2026.
The event will be hosted through a partnership announced by 9th District legislators Sen. Carmen Amato, Assemblyman Brian Rumpf and Assemblyman Greg Myhre, along with Holiday City at Berkeley, the New Jersey Department of Military Affairs, the New Jersey Department of Veterans Affairs and Feeding Our Heroes.
According to the delegation, veterans who submit all required paperwork and are approved by the state to receive medals will be invited to be recognized during the ceremony. The delegation also said it will host a free luncheon, and all veterans are invited to attend that portion of the event whether or not they are receiving a medal.
The application process will run through the New Jersey Department of Military Affairs. The announcement says all eligible veterans spanning every era are invited to apply for New Jersey Service Medals through the department. Completed applications, along with all required documentation, must be mailed to the New Jersey Department of Military Affairs no later than Sept. 7, 2026. The return mailing address is included on the application form, according to the announcement.
"Too often, the sacrifices made by our hometown heroes go unrecognized," Amato said.
"We wanted to offer a day to honor those who have proudly served our Nation," added Rumpf, who serves on the Assembly Military and Veterans' Affairs Committee.
"We believe that we should treat our veteran community as if every day is Veteran's Day, and that this would be an adequate way to show that," Myhre said.
