1. Berkeley Grandfather's Blood Alcohol Was Double Limit In Fatal Crash, Affidavit Says (patch.com) — Residents in Berkeley are learning more about the July 19 Barnegat Bay boat crash near MJ's Restaurant in Bayville that killed two young grandchildren. Court records say their grandfather, a Bayville resident, had a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit hours after the collision and now faces two counts of reckless vessel homicide while under strict monitoring conditions pending trial.
2. Ocean County police catch alleged scam courier before he gets another $30K (wchram.com) — Berkeley Township police stopped an alleged scam courier from collecting another $30,000 from a Holiday City senior who'd already been tricked into mailing a large cashier's check. Officers intervened while suspects were still calling, arrested a New York man at the victim's home, and detailed how tech-support-style scams can target Berkeley's older residents.
3. $509 Million Garden State Parkway Overhaul To Bring Major Changes To Ocean County Exits (lakewoodalerts.com) — Drivers in Berkeley Township face major changes as a $509 million Garden State Parkway overhaul reshapes exits and ramps between mileposts 80 and 83, starting in 2027. Exit 81 will be eliminated, exits renumbered, and new ramps added near Route 9 and Double Trouble Road to ease backups and improve safety along this busy Ocean County stretch.
4. Seaside Park to Berkeley: Stop taking our tax money (app.com) — Berkeley Township is being sued by neighboring Seaside Park over who should collect and keep property taxes from the recently annexed South Seaside Park neighborhood, even as Berkeley cites state guidance and shared debt obligations. The outcome could affect Berkeley's budget, bond debt, and responsibility for beach facilities and other improvements, with a key court hearing set for September.
