Berkeley Irish Flag Raising Canceled Due To Coronavirus Caution

The Irish flag will still fly at Veterans Park for the rest of March, as Berkeley celebrates Irish Heritage Month.

BERKELEY, NJ — Berkeley Township canceled Saturday's Irish Flag Raising Ceremony as a precaution for the novel coronavirus. The Irish flag will still fly in Veterans Park through March as the township honors Irish Heritage Month.

Council President Keith Buscio gave the following statement:

"I share everyone’s concerns regarding the Coronavirus and recognize the challenge it presents regarding public gatherings. I have decided as a precautionary measure and out of an abundance of caution, to cancel the Irish flag raising ceremony scheduled for tomorrow morning at Town Hall. The safety and well-being of our employees and residents, especially our seniors, is paramount."

No cases of the virus have been confirmed in Ocean County as of Friday morning. At this time, the state has confirmed 29 cases in New Jersey. Governor Phil Murphy recommended canceling all public gatherings of more than 250 people.
