Berkeley Nine Estates Applicant Announces Delay In Board Hearing

The applicant for the controversial housing units requested to go before the Planning Board in March instead of this month.

BERKELEY, NJ — The applicant for a controversial proposed housing development requested to delay its hearing with the Berkeley Planning Board.

Berkeley Nine Estates, LLC was set for a public hearing at Thursday's planning board meeting. The group requested instead to publicly go before the planning board in March.

"As a result of certain issues that have come up with respect to the application and amendments to the Plan that the Applicant will make, the Applicant has requested that the hearing be adjourned to the March, 2020 meeting," said a letter from the attorney group representing Berkeley Nine Estates, LLC.

The letter announcing the delay and the informal February meeting was sent to property owners within 200 feet of the proposed development.

The informal meeting will take place from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Bayville Elks Lodge. Concerned citizens will be able to address concerns and ask the applicant questions.

The Berkeley Nine Estates would develop housing in the area of the WOBM pit, which is just off Route 9. Concerns from residents include impact on traffic, how the population influx would affect schools, the water supply and the environment. An online petition called "SAY NO to Berkeley Nine Estates" has more than 800 signatures.

Berkeley Planning Board meetings take place at 6 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Municipal Building (627 Pinewald-Keswick Rd.).
