Berkeley Pizza Joint, VFW Team Up On Veterans' Mental Health

BERKELEY, NJ — Tony's Pizza and Bayville's Veterans of Foreign Wars post teamed up to improve the wellbeing of New Jersey veterans. Twenty percent of all Tony's Pizza orders on Aug. 20 will support the 2019-20 State Commanders Project.

Tony's Pizza is supporting the New Jersey project with VFW Post 9503.

The Commanders Project addresses several issues to improve the lives and wellbeing of New Jersey's veterans, as well as honoring forgotten soldiers:

Mental Health and Suicide Awareness

Twenty-two veterans a day die by suicide, according to the VFW. The State Commanders Project includes grants to districts, posts and partnering organizations to implement support groups, awareness campaigns, mentor programs and more on the local level.

The fourth-annual VFW Campaign to Change Direction will also take place Sept. 14. The national day of service and action sets to change the dialogue on mental health for veterans and their communities.

Continued Funding of the Department Veterans Assistance Program

The program helps veterans and troops in need who don't live near a VFW Post.

"I believe this program furthers our goal of assisting veterans before they reach a crisis point by keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table," said NJ-VFW State Commander Barbara Kim Hagemann.

Missing in America Project

The mission is to locate, identify and inter the unclaimed cremains of American veterans.

Guiding Lighthouse

A transitional homeless veteran facility open to women. The 24-month program includes mental-health counseling, financial coaching and job-skills training under a case manager's supervision.
