Berkeley Police Log: May 20 To June 6
The Berkeley Township Police Department released their most recent activity report.
BERKELEY, N.J. — Berkeley police released their activity report for May 20 to June 6. All incidents are merely accusations, and those accused are considered innocent unless and until proven guilty. Here is their unedited log:
Police Blotter May 20th through June 6th 2019
(Arrest) Theft by Deception - On May 20th 2019 the Berkeley Township Police 431 Rt. 9 (Shop Rite) after Loss Prevention conducted an internal investigation that revealed several Employees had been conducting fictitious sales transactions in order to steal merchandise from the store. As a result two subjects were arrested. These subjects, Jennifer Hausmann 43, of Staysail Ct in Bayville and Samantha Carollo 18 of Barnegat NJ were transported to Berkeley Township Police Headquarters and processed. Both subjects were later released on a summons.
Fire - On May 24th 2019 at 3:40pm, the Berkeley Township Police responded to a report of a Structure Fire at 9 Oxford Drive. Patrolman Shane Leighton, Patrolman, Brian Flanegan and Sergeant John Fosbre responded. Upon arrival, neighbors had put fire out with a garden house and the occupants were out of the house. The Manitou Park and Toms River Fire Department responded along with Berkeley EMS. The residents of the home declined medical treatment. The Berkeley Township Fire Inspector, Building Inspector, Fire Marshall, and Detective Michael O’Conner were called out to investigate. The fire was determined to be not suspicious. The house was deemed safe for the occupants to stay.

Arrest (Driving While Intoxicated)- On May 28th at 2:20 Patrolman William Shoemaker of the Berkeley Township Police arrested Rachel Grillo 20 of Florida, for Driving While Intoxicated. This occurred as the result of a motor vehicle stop in the Sonata Bay development in Bayville. Grillo was transported to police H.Q. where she was processed and later released in accordance with Johns Law. Grillo also received summonses for Open Alcohol container, underage DUI, careless driving and reckless driving.
(Arrest) Warrant- On May 29TH 2019, Patrolman Brian Flanegan arrested Gabriel Arndt DOB 5/30/78 on the strength of a warrant issued for his arrest. This was the result of a motor vehicle stop. Arndt had one warrant out of Berkeley Township for $300 and another for $500 out of Rahway NJ. Arndt was released on his own recognizance.
(Arrest) Warrants -On June 1st 2019 Jeremy Murtz 10-2-1988 of Ohio Ave, Middletown NJ, turned himself in on a $500 dollar warrant for failure to appear. Patrolman Ryan Drivanos processed the subject and he was released on his own recognizance and given a new court date.
(Arrest) Driving While Intoxicated- On June 1st 2019 at 8:15 pm, Patrolman Robert Murawski arrested David Moglia of St George St Toms River NJ for Driving while Intoxicated. Mr. Moglia was arrested after a MV stop conducted right by his home stemming from a complaint of an erratic driver. He was transported to headquarters where he processed and later released in accordance with Johns Law.
Arrest (Shoplifting) June 4th 2019 - Over the course of several months, Shoprite loss prevention became aware of a subject who would shoplift food items from their Bayville location. Further investigation revealed the male stealing the items was a Eli Campbell 30, of Bell Street in Bayville. As a result Campbell was located and arrested by Detective Michael Tier and Detective William Somers. Campbell was transported to police H.Q. where he was processed and later released on a summons.

(Arrest) On June 5th 2019 Special Law Enforcement Officer Tyler Shan performed a motor vehicle stop on Route 37. As a result the driver identified as, Raeph Koch (05/28/92) was arrested for outstanding warrants originating from Garwood N.J. Koch was transported to HQ, processed and released. Officer Shan issued two motor vehicle summons for driving while suspended and failure to produce documents.
(Arrest) Eluding Driving while Intoxicated- On June 5th 2019 Patrolman Sean Varady observed a Black Van driving erratically near Veterans Park. The vehicle then traveled at a high rate of speed towards Rout 9. Patrolman Varady observed the vehicle disregard a red traffic light at Central Parkway to Butler Blvd. Patrolman Varady then attempted to conduct a motor vehicle stop. The black van refused to stop and attempted to elude Patrolman Varady. The vehicle was observed heading towards the dead end of Butler Blvd at the Barnegat Bay. It was a short time later that Patrolman Varady observed the vehicle parked at the dead end. Patrolman Varady took the male driver into custody. This driver as identified as David Davis 28 of Beachwood N.J.
Further investigation showed that Davis appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicating liquor or drug. As a result, Davis was transported to police H.Q. where he process and charged with eluding, Driving under the Influence, Unlicensed Driver, Reckless Driving, failure to maintain lane, speeding, driving at risk to cause accident and failure to stop. Davis was remanded to the Ocean County Jail in accordance with NJ Bail reform.
(Arrest) Warrants- On June 6th 2019 at 10:45 am the Berkeley Township Police Department responded to a 2nd Ave address for a report of a disturbance. Upon arrival officers encountered a Deshaun Porter 25 of Newark N.J. Further investigation revealed that Porter had multiple outstanding warrants from several agencies. These included Berkeley Township, Little Egg Harbor, Wall Township, South Toms River, Toms River, Clark Township, Lacey Township, Manchester Township and Ocean County Superior Court. The charges include hindering apprehension, driving while suspended, obstructing Traffic, Failure to maintain lamps, driving with no driver’s license, and possession of less than 5o grams of marijuana. The total for all warrants which had bail attached was $6,250.00. Patrolman Christopher Walters was the arresting officer.
