“By renewing her National Board Certification, Felicya has not only demonstrated a strong, ongoing commitment to students and their learning, she is elevating the profession,” said Ronald Thorpe, president and CEO of the National Board.  “It is fundamental that teachers keep their practice up to date and in sync with the latest advances in the field.  Renewing National Board Certification is fundamental to ensuring that our most accomplished teachers stay accomplished.”

National Board Certification often opens many doors to teachers over the course of their careers.  Renewed NBCTs work in leadership roles throughout education, including as mentors and coaches to their peers or in administration, but their achievement shows that they are still grounded in a strong foundation of accomplished teaching.

Research has shown that National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) have a significant impact on student achievement and that their students outperform peers in other classrooms.  A 2012 study by Harvard University’s Strategic Data Project found that students of NBCTs in the Los Angeles Unified School District made learning gains equivalent to an additional two months of instruction in math and one month in English/ Language Arts.

The mission of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is to advance student learning and achievement by establishing the definitive standards and systems for certifying accomplished educators, providing programs and advocating policies that support excellence in teaching and leading, and engaging National Board Certified Teachers and leaders in that process.

“Felicya is a dedicated individual that continually strives to set the bar higher for her peers and teachers.  National Board Certification is one of the highest academic achievements awarded to educators in our country,” said Dr. Parlapanides, Superintendent of Schools.
