Driver Crashes Into Berkeley Physical Therapy Office: Police

The driver told police that he was trying to park his car when it accelerated unexpectedly, crashing into the Bayville NovaCare office.

BERKELEY, NJ — Those who had physical therapy appointments at Bayville's NovaCare Rehabilitation Monday got an unexpected call - their appointment was being canceled as a car had crashed into the building.

It was shortly after 11 a.m. on April 1 when the blue Volkswagen Atlas drove into the storefront in the Bayville Commons shopping center, located at 333 Atlantic City Blvd., according to Berkeley police.

The Volkswagen's driver had been trying to park the car in a designated handicapped space adjacent to the building, police said. He told police that while he was parking and repositioning the car, it "accelerated unexpectedly."

As a result, he crashed into the building, injuring an employee who refused further medical attention, police said.

The driver and his wife were uninjured, police said. The car was significantly damaged and was then removed by Priced Rite Towing, police said.

The Bayville Fire Department Station 17 and the Berkeley Township building inspector responded to make the scene safe. NovaCare Rehabilitation was deemed structurally unsafe for the time being and was boarded up.

The crash is under investigation by the Berkeley Township Traffic Safety Bureau.
