HOLIDAY CITY SOUTH IS INVADED BY CENTRAL REGIONAL'S ARMY JROTC

It appeared to the residents of Holiday City South that their community was being invaded by the Army when Central Regional’s JROTC cadets gathered at their clubhouse on Saturday, October 18, 2014 for a volunteer clean-up event.  The group of 27 young men and women, ages 14 through 18 years, led by Central Regional Army JROTC Colonel Michael Tier came to the aid of residents of Holiday City South in a volunteer effort to help with yard clean-up.

The Holiday City South Trustees provided Colonel Tier with a list of 18 homes of residents that needed aid and the Colonel quickly assembled the battalion into four groups.  The student battalions took to their assignments like a whirlwind.

The students made time to converse with residents and neighbors while they cleaned their designated areas.  Residents were not shy to share their own past military and athletic experiences with the cadets.  One resident showed off a 4x3 poster of himself and his wife that was specially made for their 70th wedding anniversary.  He was pictured in military uniform and it didn’t take the cadets long to identify his uniform patch as that of the U.S. Air Force.  A second resident shared her experience as a championship tennis player that volunteered herself at Central Regional as a tennis coaching assistant for 20 years before retiring from the sport.

It was a pleasure to see the interaction of the cadet students with the senior community.  It was another successful event for both the residents of Holiday City South and the cadets of the Central Regional High School Army JROTC that we hope will become an annual event of service to our senior communities.
