A while ago, I received a scary letter from NJ Blue Cross. It seems there was a break in at their Newark office, and a few laptops were stolen from their offices. Normally not a big deal - except my personal information was on those laptops! (so says Blue Cross). Now that got my attention. You may have received a similar letter, since Blue Cross is a major carrier of health insurance in NJ. They offered me a free one-year subscription to credit monitoring service, which I immediately signed up for. And then there's the whole Target data theft. It's hard to know if and where identity thieves will strike next.
The IRS is not immune to data theft and they have provided some guidelines on how to handle suspected identity theft. See the related post on on my Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/pfeifferaccounting
