Man Killed In Holiday City House Fire: Prosecutor

A recliner in the home's living room caught fire Wednesday afternoon, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.

BERKELEY, NJ — A 59-year-old man was killed in a house fire in Berkeley Township on May 10, the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office said.

Multiple fire companies in the area were dispatched to the Tortola Street home around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

Firefighters discovered the man, whose identity was not released, on the floor while doing fire suppression, Billhimer said.

The man was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River where he died from his injuries, Billhimer said.

Investigation revealed that recliner in the home's living room caught fire while the man was smoking, Billhimer said. The fire was ruled accidental.
