National Weather Service Issues Beach Hazards Alert For Ocean County Again

If you're planning on swimming on Ocean County beaches this last day of August, please be careful.

The National Weather Service has again issued a beach hazards alert, as swells from tropical weather systems continue to build in Ocean County from tropical weather systems. The alert will last into tonight, the NWS says.

"The breakers in the beach swimming zone will likely be large," the NWS says. "This will increase the risk for dangerous rip currents and can also knock swimmers and waders into the sand."

Swimmers should swim only in guarded areas patrolled by lifeguards.

"Swimming after the lifeguards go home and where lifeguards do not have you in sight raises the risk of injuries or death due to rip currents," the NWS said.

Swimmers did not heed that message on Tuesday, when some went into the water after the guards had left, according to the Harvey Cedars Beach Patrol Facebook page.

"Moments after guards left for the day, water rescue calls on LBI started coming in," the post states. "Please stay out of the water! Very dangerous rip currents, strong waves, shore break, and rising tide. Like we do everyday, many patrols are having units stay out later into the evening. Immediately dial 911 in the event of an emergency."

Skies will be mostly sunny today with highs in the mid-80s. Beach winds will be from the south at five to 10 miles per hour.

Waves will be around three feet high high, with southeast swells of three feet. The ocean water temperature is 77 degrees. There's a moderate risk of rip currents, which means wind and wave conditions can support stronger or more frequent rip currents.

Always bring a flotation device with you in the water and swim only in guarded areas. There is no lightning threat for today.

High tide at Barnegat Inlet arrived at 7:35 a.m. Low tide will roll in at 1:49 p.m., followed by another high tide at 7:53 p.m.
