Solar Field Still Planned For Berkeley Landfill

Officials shared updates regarding the planned solar field at the closed Berkeley Landfill at a recent Township Council meeting.

BERKELEY, NJ — Nearly a year after it was first announced, township officials assured residents that the solar field planned for the Berkeley landfill site is still ongoing.

Mayor Carmen Amato said that "it is progressing, not as quickly as we would like it to," due to the regulatory agencies involved.

Township Planner James Oris said that because the landfill, located across the street from Berkeley Town Hall, is in the Pinelands, the township is working with the Pinelands Commission to cap the landfill and get permits.

"We're hopeful that we'll get through the regulatory restraints in the next six months," Oris said.

Eventually, he said, "once all the pieces of the puzzle are approved," an official announcement will be made for those who want to sign up for the community solar program.

Oris suggested working with the administration to share more regular updates on the Berkeley Township website.
