Support Surges For Family After Fatal Barnegat Bay Boating Crash

BERKELEY, NJ — The community is rallying around the family who lost two young children in a Barnegat Bay boat crash Sunday.

The boat crashed into an Intracoastal Waterway channel marker Sunday night, throwing the children, a 9-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy, into the water, police said.

The boat's operator, 63-year-old Stephen Schneider, and another occupant, 64-year-old Laurie Schneider, both of Bayville, found the two children unresponsive in the water, police said.

Media reports identified them as the children's grandparents. The cause of the crash has not yet been revealed by investigators.

The siblings, Mya and Sigmund Golabek, are being remembered for the impact they had in their short lives.

"Mya and Siggy were not only brother and sister, but best friends who shared laughter, adventures, and countless memories," their obituaries read. "Now they continue their journey together, hand in hand, carrying their love beyond this world and leaving behind a beautiful reminder of the unbreakable bond they shared."

Mya is described in her obituary as a "sweet, fun-loving girl who loved being active and had a competitive spirit that shined in everything she did." She played softball and basketball. She also loved swimming, spending time at the beach, and crabbing, her obituary said. "Mya’s creativity came alive through crafting and drawing, where she loved creating, expressing herself, and sharing her artistic side with those around her."

In his obituary, Siggy is described as "a sweet, shy, but adventurous little boy with a big imagination and a personality all his own. He loved the excitement of basketball, baseball, the fun of swimming, and the adventures that came from the things he loved most."

He was an animal lover who had a special bond with his dogs. "They were more than pets to him — they were his companions, his friends, and a source of so much love and happiness. The joy he shared with them was a beautiful reflection of his caring and gentle heart."

In lieu of flowers, donations to the 10u Lacey Storm Softball team or the Popcorn Park Zoo are requested.

A Meal Train created to support the family has all of its dates booked.

"We have received an abundance of donations for the family and cannot thank everyone enough for their generosity," the listing reads. "At this time, keeping the family in your prayers is an amazing way to support them."
