Art by Jean Davidson: An Exploration of Art Media

February Exhibition at Bernardsville Library

Bernardsville Public Library is pleased to present “Art by Jean Davidson: An Exploration of Art Media” during the month of February. Jean Davidson is a self-taught artist; her entry into the world of art came later in life when she studied with various artists and printmakers. She is an avid reader of instructional art books and works in watercolor, mixed media, acrylic, pastel, collage, photography and printmaking. Most of her printmaking involves monotype and block printing.

She is an artist who likes to experiment, explore and try new things. For her, art is a blending of materials and the ideas they inspire. She constantly looks at her work (particularly with abstracts) as it progresses to see what needs to be added or changed. Often a piece starts with no subject in mind. She describes her working process, “Paint or ink is put to paper and a start is made. Careful study reveals ideas or images for development. Interaction with the work begins and often leads along an unanticipated path to produce something completely unforeseen.” She freely admits that conventional wisdom advises artists to develop a distinctive style and perfect it. That is too stifling an option for her, she says, as her art is generally a voyage of discovery.

Ms. Davidson is a member of four art associations as well as the Print Center of New Jersey, the Livingston Camera Club, and the Book Arts Roundtable. She has exhibited in many juried group shows and has had several one woman shows. She has won awards for watercolors, photography, mixed media, collages and monotypes.
