Bedminster Residents May Get Free Mulch

Debris from Superstorm Sandy will be ground into mulch beginning in April.

Residents can have their own pieces of “Mount Bedminster” starting next month.

Township administrator Judy Sullivan announced that the Department of Public Works will begin mulching the branches and limbs left from Superstorm Sandy. She called the pile of debris at the DPW building “Mount Bedminster.”

“We’re going to have a lot of free mulch,” she said. “Tons and tons.”

The mulch may be available to residents beginning April 15, though no definite date has been set.

Mayor Steven Parker said the mulch may not be the same as the mulch available at garden stores.

“This is not designer mulch,” he said with a laugh.

There will be so much mulch that the township may be inviting professional landscapers to get some, Sullivan said, adding that the township could work with contractors to schedule pick-ups.

DPW Director John Mantz said the word should go out to the homeowner associations in the Hills that the mulch will be available so they can offset their costs.

Mantz, who estimated there might be 600 cubic yards of mulch available, also said that he will not be spreading the mulch in the township’s dog park.

“I don’t want their little paws getting splinters,” he said.
