Bedminster's Jacobus Vanderveer House Celebrates Flag Day With Betsy Ross

BEDMINSTER, NJ — The Jacobus Vanderveer House & Museum in Bedminster will mark Flag Day with an interactive living history program for children and families on Sunday, June 14, featuring a portrayal of Betsy Ross by Kim Hanley of the American Historical Theatre in Philadelphia.

The program begins at 1 p.m. and is geared toward students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Hanley will portray Ross — a native New Jerseyan, Quaker, skilled seamstress, and businesswoman credited with sewing the first American flag — and invite young audience members to join her in her upholstery shop as she constructs the Stars and Stripes step-by-step on a colorful felt story-board. Hanley is an accomplished historical interpreter whose past appearances include the White House Visitors Center, the National Archives in Washington, D.C. and New York City, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Franklin Institute, and the Museum of the American Revolution.

House tours will be available from noon to 4 p.m., with light refreshments provided. A Children's Reading Hour is also scheduled from 3 to 4 p.m. The Jacobus Vanderveer House is located at River Road Park, 3055 River Road in Bedminster.
