Bernardsville Library Offers Help with College Essays

One essay sizzles off the page and another—perhaps equally compelling—falls flat. To construct a powerful narrative, you need to know the building blocks. What story do I tell? Where do I start? Find out the answers to these questions at Bernardsville Public Library on Thursday, July 26 at 7:00 pm. Alisha Davlin, currently an outside undergraduate admissions reader at New York University, will guide students in Grades 11 and 12 through every step from brainstorming to final edits. "You want the reader to connect with your voice, to know you, and most importantly—to remember you," says Ms. Davlin.

Alisha Davlin worked as an English and creative writing teacher at The Pingry School for eight years; prior to that, she served as a writing instructor at Lafayette College and a creative writing professor at New York University. She holds an M.Ed. from Columbia University and an MFA in creative writing from New York University. Having been on both sides of the college admissions process, Ms. Davlin brings her unique perspective to this class. The founder of Davlin Tutoring, she has worked with more than 500 clients and students. As an NYU outside undergraduate admissions reader, she is well versed in what makes a memorable college essay.
