Bernardsville Republicans to Face Two Competitors for Borough Council

Democrat gains write-in seat while incumbent Republican now opposing party's two endorsed candidates.

There may have been no race in Bernardsville's primary race for two positions on the Borough Council, but November will be a different story.

Janet Waite and Chris Schmidt, given the endorsement of the local Republican party, received 441 and 406 votes respectively from local registered Republicans.

However, Borough Clerk Sandra Jones confirmed that Craig Lawrence, who remains a Republican Borough Councilman through the end of the year, had filed with the Somerset County clerk for a position on the ballot in November.

Two three-year seats on the Borough Council are up for election this year. Republican Councilman Kevin Sooey declined to seek re-election, while Lawrence failed to gain the endorsement of what has been a divided Republican municipal committee in recent years.

Meanwhile, 29 unofficial votes gave Democrat Robert Frawley all he needed to gain a spot on the ballot as a Democrat this November.

In Bedminster, the elections went as expected, with no contest on the individual Republican and Democratic sides.

Republican incumbents Bernie Pane and Staci Santucci earned 419 and 420 votes, respectively.

Democrats Basil Scaperdas and Laura Riley earned 97 and 92 votes, respectively.

These four candidates will be vying for two open seats on the Bedminster Township Committee in the November elections.
