Bridgewater Seniors Donate 360 Quilts

Residents at Arbor Glen senior living community in Bridgewater make quilts for those impacted by the floods and the 9-11 attacks

It’s been one years since a large portion of the New Jersey area was hit by destructive flood waters. Groups around the country saw a need to lend a helping hand, and acted quickly. That was no different for a group of women at Arbor Glen, a senior living community in Bridgewater.

The women, all in their 80s and 90s, went to work making quilts. Dozens of them were donated to flood victims. This is just one of many stories the group can tell of their donations to charities.

The group started making and donating the quilts after the attacks on 9-11. They stared as red, white and blue. In all, 60 of them were donated to families who lost someone on that day.

In the years since, the colors and designs have changed. They’ve donated more than 360 quilts. Some of them go to homeless families, hospitals and Arbor Glen’s own staff members who’ve fallen on hard times.

Joan Bloomer, who’s been in the group for all of its 16 years, says while they’re helping others with their quilting, they’re also forming lifelong bonds with each other. Every Wednesday, you can find the ladies working on a quilt. They laugh and chat about their grandkids and great-grandkid
