Bridgewater Woman Killed In Bernardsville Head-On Crash

Breaking: Ashley Cardona, 26, of Bridgewater was a graduate of BRHS and RVCC and did fundraising for Puerto Rico.

BERNARDSVILLE, NJ — A 26-year-old Bridgewater woman, Ashley Cardona, was killed in a head-on collision Tuesday night on Route 202, Bernardsville Police Lt. John Remian told Patch.

Cardona was driving a 2009 Honda Civic west on Route 202 South at 5:02 p.m. when she crossed over the double yellow lines and struck a 2017 Cadillac Escalade head on coming in the opposite direction, Remian said.

The crash, reported at 5:02 p.m., caused the Escalade to flip over onto its roof and slide off the roadway, Remain said.

The driver of the Escalade was identified as Jaime Morais, 41, of Bernardsville. There was a also a 15-year-old girl inside the Escalade at the time of the crash. Both were transported by ambulance to Morristown Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Remain said.

Cardona was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center where she was later pronounced dead.

It is still unclear why Cardona crossed over the yellow lines and police are still investigating.

Cardona graduated from Bridgewater-Raritan Regional High School and Raritan Valley Community College. She also worked locally and did a bunch of fundraising for Puerto Rico, a family friend told Patch.
