Contested Symbols: Memorials, They Go Up, They Come Down

An examination of the politics of and public response to memorials through numerous lenses.

When it comes to memorials, heritage and events are political and often reflected in the monuments that are erected. As ideologies change, groups become more or less powerful in privileging the commemorated, or as new information comes to light, new monuments are created and/or old ones are removed. Dr. Barbara Seater, professor at Raritan Valley Community College, will examine the politics of and public response to memorials through numerous lenses at Bernardsville Public Library on Tuesday, February 13 at 7:00 pm.

Dr. Seater has taught for more than 40 years at Raritan Valley Community College in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences. She twice received Mid-Career Fellowships at Princeton University. Her approach to teaching sociology, particularly in the areas of race and ethnic relations, has been to focus on history, law, and public policy.

This program has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities (NJCH). Any views, findings, conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the NEH or NJCH.
