Cub Scout Pack 451 Designs Cars and Visits a Mining Museum

The boys are gearing up for one of the most exciting Cub Scout traditions--the Pinewood Derby

The Cub Scouts in Pack 451 are gearing up for one of the most exciting traditions in Scouting—the Pinewood Derby, in which they design their own wooden cars and race them on a track. At their November 20 Pack meeting, the boys received design tips from Tor Alden, owner of HS Design, and began to draw outlines of their cars.

On December 11, they visited the workshop of Bert Fonde, owner of Bertram’s Builds Fine Woodworking & Custom Cabinetry, to carve and refine their cars with band saws.

At the December 18 Pack meeting, the boys learned how to paint and decorate their vehicles. They also had fun playing games, such as mini golf and basketball, at the winter carnival, which was organized by Bear Cub Scouts (third graders).

On December 5, the Cub Scouts visited the Sterling Hill Mining Museum, formerly a zinc mine, in Ogdensburg, NJ. The boys took an underground tour of the mine and learned about the lives and work of the miners. They enjoyed checking out the displays of glow-in-the-dark minerals and learned how to recognize six different types of rock. It was a fun and educational way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
