Cub Scout Pack 451's Day at the Races
The Pack held another successful--and fun--Pinewood Derby!
It was the event the Cub Scouts in Pack 451 had been anticipating for months—the Pinewood Derby. Over a period of several weeks, they carved, refined and decorated their wooden race cars, then named them and checked them in for the big race.
On Saturday, February 20, members of each den—the Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos I and II—raced against one another. There were several heats, then the winners were announced. Basking Ridge Deputy Mayor Carolyn Gaziano handed out awards to the first, second and third place winners.
The boys had an unforgettable day and are already thinking about how to design a winning car for next year’s race. “They learned a lot from building their cars from scratch,” says Nishoo Sethi, co-chair of the Derby. “For instance, they were required to understand how to handle tools safely before carving their cars, and they learned how weights help their cars go faster.”
