Drawing/Painting Classes at Farmstead Arts Center, Basking Ridge

Introduction to Drawing
Tuesdays, July 19-August 23, 10am-12pm OR
Thursdays, July 14-August 18, 7pm-9pm
$150, all materials included
This class will introduce students to the fundamental principles of drawing. Students will work with a variety of drawing materials and learn to create realistic 2D imagery. No previous experience required.
Introduction to Pastels
Tuesdays, July 19-August 23, 12:30pm-2:30pm
$150, all materials included
This course in chalk pastels will introduce students to the basic principles of this medium, as well as experimental techniques. Students will learn how to develop their imagery, working from direct observation and photographic references. No previous experience required.

Introduction to Watercolors
Tuesdays, July 19-August 23, 7pm-9pm
$150, all materials included
Students will learn basic watercolor techniques, both traditional and non-traditional. Still lives and landscapes will be explored, as elements of composition, design, and basic skills will be refined through color, shading, value, and proportions. No previous experience required.
Colored Pencil Drawing
Wednesdays, July 13-August 17, 10am-12pm
$150, all materials included
Explore the wide range of drawing possibilities using watercolor colored pencils. From traditional uses to more contemporary applications, students will observe forms and use pencils and brushes, working with still life arrangements, photographic references, and personal imagery. No previous experience required.

Indoor Studio Landscapes
Wednesdays, July 13-August 17, 12:30pm-2:30pm
$150, all materials included
Students will create outdoor landscapes indoors, as they translate their 3D world onto a 2D picture plane. An understanding of compositional elements, shading, color, and perspective will help develop spatial appearances, working with a variety of dry 2D drawing materials and using photographic references and imagination. No previous experience required.
Teen Drawing and Painting
Wednesdays, July 13-August 17, 7pm-9pm
$150, all materials included
This class will introduce students to the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Working with a variety of drawing and painting materials, they will learn to create convincing 2D imagery of the 3D world. Ages 13+. No previous experience required.
Vacations Revisited
Thursdays, July 14-August 18, 10am-12pm
$150, all materials included
Give those memorable vacations artistic presence by drawing and painting them, using photographic references and personal recollections. Students will work in the medium of their choice (such as watercolors, colored pencils, pastels, inks), refining their memories and recording them on paper. Concepts of composition, form, value, perspective, and color will be used to highlight those vacations. No previous experience required.
Art Sampler
Thursdays, July 14-August 18, 12:30pm-2:30pm

Learn basic principles of a variety of drawing and painting techniques as you develop your powers of observation. Explore and expand your creative side as you build self-confidence in your artistic skills with step-by-step instruction and demonstrations. No previous experience required.
Portfolio Development for ages 16 and up
Monday July 25-Friday July 29 (five consecutive days), 3pm-5pm
$150, all materials included
Students will gain an understanding of artwork required in developing a diverse, yet cohesive body of artwork. This class will review how to present a portfolio for school admission/employment, and how to photograph individual art pieces. Artwork will be reviewed with recommendations for establishing and maintaining a solid, unified body of work. Individual drawings will be completed in class that will fill any possible gaps in students’ portfolios.
Teen Studio Week
Monday July 18-Friday July 22 (five consecutive days), 3pm-5pm
$150, all materials included
Students will develop and complete a drawing or painting of their choice over five consecutive days that reflects personal selections of imagery and materials. Photographic references and still life materials can be used. Ages 13+. All materials provided.
Introduction to Drawing and Painting (ages 9-12)
Tuesdays, July 19-August 23, 3:00-4:30pm
$125, all materials included
This class is an ideal way to introduce young artists to a variety of different materials, techniques, and the fundamental principles of drawing and painting. Students will strengthen established skills, as they have fun developing and exploring new understandings in color, perspective, and composition through still lives, photographic references, and imagination. Demonstrations and individual attention given. No previous experience required.
