An Exhibition of Bird Paintings by Sean Murtha at Scherman Hoffman
Opening Exhibit Reception September 20th, 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm. A variety of oil paintings will be on view, September 20th- November 28th
Sean graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and previously worked at the American Museum of Natural History, in Manhattan. There he was able to mix his love of painting with his interest in nature to produce over a dozen dioramas. It was there that he became devoted to the practice of painting en plein air. He is currently employed at the Bruce Museum of Art and Science in Greenwich, CT, and continues to create dioramas on a freelance basis, most recently for Earthplace in Westport CT and the Vanderbilt Museum in Centerport NY. He paints and sketches from life, both landscapes and birds, using this as the foundation for more ambitious studio works.
He is a member of the Society of Animal Artists, SAA, the Lyme Art Association and the Rowayton Art Association. He exhibits regularly with those groups and is also represented by the Greene Art Gallery in Guilford, CT. He has also shown at The Cape May Bird Observatory Gallery in Cape May NJ, the Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington Vermont, and the prestigious Birds in Art at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wausau WI. In 2011 he received an “Award of Excellence” from both the SAA and the Artists for Conservation,AFC, and in 2013 was honored as “Artist of the year” by Connecticut Audubon.
