. Cacciola Gallery-W presents SUMMER DISCOVERIES: An Ever-Changing Group Exhibition
On view thru September 9, 2016
The title of this exhibition, Summer Discoveries, is meant to highlight the fresh and original perspectives of the artists collaborating. This exhibition challenges our mundane perception of painting, interrupting the stock-photos of the mind to provide a fresh new perspective. When you think of landscape after visiting our gallery, we hope you think of the depth and richness of color and pattern that can be achieved to reflect nature. When you consider still life and figure paintings, think of expressive, neutral-toned oases of form and color.

Serena Bocchino is an artist who visually interprets themes of American jazz music in her paintings. Serena Bocchino has received recognition and awards from many institutions, including New York City’s Artists Space, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, the Museum of Modern Art, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Her work has been shown around the US and Internationally in solo and group exhibitions, with some of her newer work being featured in this summer exhibition at J. Cacciola Gallery W. The incorporation of mirrors into her poured paintings transcends the picture plane by “breaking the fourth wall” between the audience and her work.
Julie Friedman refers to herself as a colorist. When you look at her work, you understand why. Her newest works, on view for the summer in our gallery, are rich in color and movement, exquisitely depicting the calm before a storm and the rustle of tall grass. She is known for her abstracted landscapes. She has received various awards from organizations including the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club and the Pastel Society of America.

Tim Merrett is an Ontario-based painter whose work has been shown Internationally, as well as held in various corporate and private collections . His “excavated” paintings appropriate historical works, such as Manet, Vermeer, etc, often incorporating geometric color blocks or frames to emphasize some aspect of color in the piece, allowing the viewer to rediscover classical and modern works outside of their historical context.
Rick Newton is a Florida-based painter who uses scientific and Cold War imagery to create surreal, futuristic landscapes. His work has been shown Internationally at Blue Leaf Gallery in Dublin, Ireland and various institutions in the US such as Baton Rouge Gallery of Contemporary Art, LA and the Art and Culture Center in Hollywood, FL.
Wes Sherman is highly involved in the Somerset County art community. A curator as well as an arts educator, he is all about discoveries that can be made through art. Wes’s landscape paintings emphasize the basic patterns to be found in nature, simplifying a scene to its fundamental colors and shapes.
Maggie Siner studied at the Art Students League of New York in 1968, graduated from Boston University (BFA) and American University (MFA) and has lived in France, China and Italy. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums for over 30 years and is in hundreds of private collections around the world. Siner’s work is classically derived yet contemporary. While freely handled and gestural, her paintings have a strong sense of underlying structure. The new works included in this exhibition come from Venice, where she has been living and working.
Mavis Smith’s delicate Egg Tempera works were on display at our gallery recently this past year. We are excited to incorporate her work into this exhibition because of her subtle elements of surrealism and emphasis on color. Smith studied at Pratt institute in NY and went on to the Seattle Academy of Fine Art. Her work has been exhibited throughout the NJ/PA region and internationally, including Art Basel in Switzerland, as well as in group shows throughout the region.
